Urine Analysis Strips

Laboratory professionals use a variety of ways to test urine samples. One is direct observation under a microscope and another is through an immersion of urine analysis strips (or urine test strips) in the sample.

Urine analysis strips are basic materials found in diagnostic laboratories. A standard urine strip has up to 10 different chemical pads that include glucose, blood, protein, leukocytes, nitrite, ketones, urobilinogen, bilirubin, pH value, and specific gravity pads. The strip is immersed in a urine sample from 1 to 2 minutes. Once taken out, the strip will change colors which signifies a chemical reaction with the urine.

Doctors look at the results on the chemical pad reactions to determine screening parameters from urine analysis strips. For instance, positive reactions to leukocytes, nitrite, protein, blood, specific gravity and pH level indicate diseases of the kidneys and urinary tract.

Liver diseases are detected by reactions with urobilinogen and biliburin, while carbohydrate metabolism disorders are detected in reactions to glucose and ketones chemicals.

The use of urine analysis strips is a fast and easy method of diagnosing a variety of diseases. It is used in many healthcare facilities for routine examinations, for self-monitoring of patients, as aid in preventive medication and in guided monitoring by healthcare workers. It is especially helpful in detecting diabetic and kidney diseases patients in group screenings. Today, automated urine test strip analyzer makes this instrument a mainstay of modern urine analysis laboratories.

Eye Stye – What Is It And What Causes It?

An eye stye or a hordeolum is the name given to the small bump that could possibly appear on the inside or the outside of your eyelid. In most cases, it is a bacterial infection that will be caused owing to some obstructions in the glands that produce oil and are present close to the eyelids.

The occurrence of an eye stye will generally depend on the infection of the bacteria called staphylococcal. These bacteria will end up infecting the tiny glands that rest at the eyelids’ hair base, and this region would become inflamed. When this occurs, the region becomes highly contagious; and the resultant itching to relive the discomfort will actually promote the transfer of the bacteria from one hair root to another.

A stye is generally not harmful to the person’s vision; and it could commonly affect people regardless of age and gender.

The Symptoms:

Patients who have an eye stye might generally complain of –

  • Watery eyes
  • Tenderness
  • Pain
  • Redness around the affected region
  • Itching

Typically speaking, the start of a stye will be with increased sensitivity to light. This might lead to excessive production of tears, and there will be the nagging sensation of an alien body in the eye. Very soon, the eyelid that is affected will begin sensing the inflammation and it will turn red and will undergo local pain. This sort of pain and tenderness will continue developing until the stye is developing.

In most cases, the stye head will generally point outwards. However, in the more uncommon cases, the infection of the eyelids will point inwards, given the involvement of oily glands that are inside the eyelids. These types of internal styes might be even more painful in compared to the ones that inflict the external eyelid.

The Causes:

People who suffer from a condition called chronic blepharitis are generally prone to the development and growth of eye styes. This happens due to the bacterial growth and buildup within the glands that will end up infecting it.

Sharing eye makeup or even wearing too much of eye makeup could end up promoting the development of a stye.

Although there is no viable proof to claim that stress is known to cause for the buildup of a stye, there have been links that have been seen. The growth of a stye seems possible when a person is undergoing high levels of stress.

The Treatment:

Symptoms Of Walking Pneumonia or Community-Acquired Pneumonia

The respiratory system is one of the most important systems in the human body. People survive through breathing. As respiration is a vital function of the human body, any abnormalities that occur in it may become a serious problem. A common infection that people acquire is pneumonia. Many microorganisms can lead to pneumonia. However, there are similarities among the signs and symptoms they bring. An awareness regarding these manifestations can lead to better prognosis. The following are the signs and symptoms of walking pneumonia, or more commonly known as community-acquired pneumonia.

The manifestations of walking pneumonia are more acute than chronic. It is called walking pneumonia because one may walk around without realizing that he has the disease. The symptoms of walking pneumonia are the same with the typical pneumonia but are less severe. Some common symptoms are fever, cough, chills, fatigue, headache, sore throat and chest pain especially during deep breathing and coughing. The cough is often dry. However, as the disease progresses, the cough may be productive and produce phlegm. The manifestations sometimes take three to four weeks before its full effect can be seen. It progresses gradually unlike other types of pneumonia.

Since the symptoms of walking pneumonia are generally not that severe, some people do not realize they have it. Some think that they have the simple flue or chest cold. Due to this reason, they continue with their daily activities. This is one reason why walking pneumonia is common. Transmission often happens due to neglect.

After learning the common symptoms of walking pneumonia, it is best to be keener regarding the symptoms and complaints you are having. However, practicing measures to prevent one from getting the disease is still the best way to keep healthy. Practicing proper hygiene and avoiding crowded areas are some ways to do so.
